Tuscazoar Adventure Race- July 18, 2020

Rugged adventure awaits in this action-packed race! Run, Paddle, Trek, Mountain Bike, and Orienteering! Navigate your way around Camp Tuscazoar, the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail and the Tuscarawas River to see if you have what it takes to earn the title! Team up with friends or tackle the challenge solo. Racers will cover up to 16+ miles over the rugged and beautiful terrain of Northern Tuscarawas County, picking up checkpoints along the way!

 

RACES

 

THE SPRINTER

This is a classic-triathlon style Adventure Race.  The legs of the race are laid out in a specific order. Competitors will do the race legs in order until they finish the course. The Mountain Bike stage will be on the 3 mile East Side Trails.  

Stages: Running - Paddling & Trekking - Mountain Biking

Recommended level: Beginner to Intermediate

Race Categories:

Solo: Male / Female

Two-person teams: Male / Female / Co-ed

THE ULTIMATE

This is a classic-triathlon style Adventure Race.  The legs of the race are laid out in a specific order. Competitors will do the race legs in order until they finish the course. This race includes an orienteering element and more challenging Mountain Bike stage on the West Side Trails.  

Stages: Orienteering - Running - Paddling & Trekking - Mountain Biking  

Recommended level: Intermediate to Expert

RUNNING & ORIENTEERING SECTIONS  (Racers must carry water with them at all times and wear appropriate footwear)

The SPRINTER race will begin with the running section.  

The ULTIMATE race will begin with the orienteering section followed by the running section.

Orienteering Section (Ultimate Race Only)   

For those who want to compete at the Ultimate level, the first leg will be an Orienteering adventure. The event time frame allows for a micro-Rogaine, with 15 – 20 controls placed around the Camp. Beginning with a mass start, competitors will have 45 minutes to find the pre-set flags (aka controls) and make it back to the Finish. Points are deducted at an increasing rate for every minute a competitor exceeds the 45 minute limit. Controls have different point values based upon the level of difficulty in reaching them. Depending on the competitor’s skill, it may not be possible to reach them all. So, competitors may need to choose a strategy (for example, visit more low-score controls, or fewer high-score controls), that allows them to best utilize that 45 minutes. The goal is to have the highest net point score.  

 

PADDING SECTION

Canoes, SUPs, and Kayaks are not provided, you will need to be bring your own. You must have paddles and PFDs.  They will be stage with your boat located at the transition area. You will not need to carry paddles or PFDs. You are responsible for transporting your boat and gear to the staging area prior to the beginning of the race. Once you exit the river/paddling section you must leave your Canoe, SUP, or Kayak, and paddle equipment in the transition area.  All boats and gear (PFD and paddle) will be transported back to the race start for you.

Portage: You will need to portage your boat from the transition area to the river access as part of the race. Portage distance is roughly 250 to 400 yards based on the location of your boat at the staging area.  Drop off your boat early to get a good spot!

Trekking: At the river takeout you will begin a grueling Trek out of the Tuscarawas River Valley to the mountain bike transition area.

 

MOUNTAIN BIKE SECTION

Road and Cyclo Cross bikes are not permitted. Racers must use the same bike throughout the entire race. In the event of mechanical failures, replacement parts can be used but they must be provided by the team, other racers, or an event official. No outside assistance is allowed. Bikes will not be checked for mechanical worthiness, but we recommend your bike be in good working order. Tuscazoar offers some of the most challenging mountain bike trails in Ohio!

 

DISTANCE

Sprinter: Estimated mileage for race stages are: Running 5 miles - Paddling 3.5 miles - Trek 1 mile - Mountain Biking 3 miles  

Ultimate: Estimated mileage for race stages are: Orienteering N/A - Running 5 miles - Paddling 3.5 miles - Trek 1 mile - Mountain Biking 8.5 miles 

Official mileage will be released closer to the race date

GEAR

Mandatory Gear

Mandatory gear will not be checked during check-in. Random checks on gear may be performed during the race.  These items are not all inclusive of items you will need to complete the race. You will be out in the elements for the length of the race. Bring other equipment as appropriate to get you through the event.

  • Water-Hydration system (Hydration pack, water bottle, etc.)
  • Closed-toe shoes must be worn during the entire race (no bare feet or open-toe sandals)
  • Mountain bike (mandatory). The terrain will not be paved so make sure your bike can go on hard packed dirt trails and gravel roads.
  • Helmet (CPSC, ANSI, or SNELL certified)
  • PFD Class II

Solo (Kayak / SUP / Canoe)

Two-person teams (Double Canoe /  Double Kayak / Two Single Kayaks / SUPs)

RACE SCHEDULE

7:00 am - 8:00 am    Boat drop off at Canal Lands Area

7:00 am - 8:45 am    Race Packet Pickup at Camp Tuscazoar

8:45 am                    Pre-Race Brief – Mandatory for all teams  

9:30 am                    Race Start (Staggered)

4:00 pm                    Race Finishes

4:00 pm – 5:00 pm    Post-race food trucks and award ceremony

 

TIMING

We will be using a staggered start and chip timing system. Timing will be from START to FINISH.  NO split times for individual disciplines will be provided for the purpose of this race.

Lodging

There are several options for lodging in the area.  Camp Tuscazoar offers a variety of options for overnight accommodations.  There are cabins, tent sites, RV sites, and also available will be individual bunks for a small fee of $10 per night.  You can visit the offerings from Tuscazoar through their website: www.tuscazoar.org.
