What is the Monday Night Mile?
Great question, and we're glad you asked!
This event is solely a fundraiser to support the valiant efforts of Jeff Roche as he uses The Akron Marathon to raise money for Akron Children's Hospital as a Children's Champion. His goal is to raise $3000 to help provide medical care for children in our area who would not otherwise be able to afford it, and he's well on his way. With our help, he'll surpass his goal...but we need your help!
Jeff LOVES running on the track, dating back to his college track & field days, and he has a very personal connection and passion for Akron Children's Hospital, so combining his love for the oval with his fundraising efforts seemed almost too obvious and a little bit fun!
Here is a quick recap, in Jeff's words:
"I'm trying to raise money by running as a Children's Champion in a series of races this year. I ran the National Interstate 8k in June, enjoyed the Goodyear 10k in August, this September 29th I will run the half marathon!
These are always great races that support a great cause. So, I’ve decided to use my training and participation to raise money for the hospital that saved my son’s life. I’m going to be a Children’s Champion.
For those who don't know the whole story: When my son Christopher was seven years old when he was diagnosed with a Wilm’s tumor, a rare form of kidney cancer just a few days before Halloween. It was aggressive and growing rapidly. After months of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and surgeries, he was back in school and ready to get on with being a kid again.
That’s when we found out that the kidney cancer had somehow spread to his brain. His doctors were flummoxed, this just didn’t happen with this type of cancer. There were only a few known cases ever, anywhere. There was no protocol treatment. Working with and consulting colleagues around the world, the pediatric oncologists at ACH created a plan to save our son’s life. It involved brain surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and a complete stem cell transplant. He was in isolation at the hospital for months. The doctors, nurses, volunteers, and support staff were always professional, friendly, and compassionate. ACH is a special place. It deserves your support.
I am so proud of my son. He just graduated from high school with academic honors and as an important member of its award-winning newspaper staff. He is heading to college soon.
ACH has helped almost one million children overcome everything from broken arms to burns to cancer over the years.
I am trying to raise $3000.00 on behalf of Christopher and our entire family for Akron Children’s. I hope to make some small difference for its mission and very special patients. Please help.
Any donation, any amount, will make a huge difference.
